Bat Evolution and Species

big brown bat

Did you know that bats are more closely related to humans and primates than they are to rodents? Their wings are very similar to the human hand. They actually have fingers and thumbs on their wings. Their fingers can be as long a their bodies and these fingers provide support for their wings. Bats are warm-blooded, give birth to live young, and feed their young milk. These attributes make them mammals. They are the only mammals that can truly fly.

There are over 1,100 bats species in the world. In NYS you will find the Silver Hair Bat, the Hoary Bat, the Big Brown Bat, the Red bat, the Eastern Pipistrelle Bat, the Indiana Bat, the Little Brown Bat and the Northern. The most common bat found in our service area, the Greater Hudson Valley, is the Little Brown Bat. Its body measures approximately two inches long and it has a wingspan of eight to nine inches. Little Brown Bats hibernate in massive clusters. In one cave nearly 200,000 bats were documented in hibernation together. Can you imagine what it looks like when they all fly out? Another common bat in our service area is the Big Brown Bat. It is the largest of the NYS cave bats. Its body is three inches long with a wingspan of thirteen inches. It is the most tolerant of cool temperatures and very often is the species of bat that one finds hibernating in commercial buildings over the winter. Unfortunately White Nose Syndrome has decimated the bat population, eliminating bat colonies by 80-97%.  It is this very reason that we at Wildlife Busters take the utmost care when dealing with bats in your home and or commercial space. It is important to support their reproduction to help rebuild their population. We are mindful of their mating season and practice human bat removal techniques to ensure their safety and yours.
