Bed Bug Elimination, A Multi Step Process

First Step, Prior to the Pest Control Professional arrives:

  • Wipe The bed bugs with a wet rag and crush them.
  • You may also use a commercial steamer using the “dry steam” option to kill the bed bugs and eggs.
  • Vacuuming will also reduce large numbers of bedbugs quickly.
  • Make sure you dispose outside the house the vacuum bag and any rags you may have used
  • Save a live bug sample in a zip-type sandwich bag if possible. This will allow the pest control professional to correctly identify the type of bed bug(s) present before they recommend a method of treatment.

Second Step, Hire a Pest Control Professional:

  • You will need a Pest Control Professional to eliminate a bed bug infestation.
  • Elimination methods will include non-chemical and chemical controls available only to a licensed pest control professional.
  • A reputable Pest Control Professional will give you instructions to prepare for their visit.
  • Follow their instructions or else you could potentially spread the infestation to other areas within the home.
  • Professional will ask for your help in eliminating the infestation, such as vacuuming the floors, beds and furniture; launder linens and clothes, and install mattress and box spring encasements, and remove clutter.

Third Step, Eliminate or Remove Clutter as Directed by the Professional:

  • Clutter provides bed bugs a place to hide
  • In the future, keep everything off the floor including old magazines, books, clothes, and keepsakes.
  • Discard all unnecessary and unneeded items.
  • Do not store things under or around the bed.

Forth Step, Clean as instructed by the Professional:

  • Clean areas where bed bugs are likely to hide. Use soap and warm water on surfaces that will not be damaged by moisture. C
  • Clean or vacuum bedding, linens, curtains, rugs, carpets, and clothes. Wash items in hot water and dry them on the highest dryer setting.
  • Items that cannot be washed (like wool or fabrics that may shrink, stuffed animals or shoes) need to be carefully dried in the dryer.
  • Dry cleaning will kill bed bugs deliver the clothes in a sealed plastic bag and inform the dry cleaner the items may be infested with bed bugs (some dry cleaners may refuse infested items because they could escape and be taken home by other customers).
  • Vacuum carpets along the edges and where the carpets meet the walls.

Fifth Step, Disposal of Infested Items:

  • Do not resell or give away infested furniture or clothing.
  • Throw infested furniture away; make it unusable by slashing the upholstery.
  • Seal infested items in plastic bags to prevent spreading bed bugs on the way to the outside trash.
  • Put a warning by spray painting or marking discarded items “Infested with bed bugs!”
  • After vacuuming, place the vacuum cleaner bag in a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it in an outdoor trash immediately.

All these steps may seem cumbersome but are necessary to eradicate and prevent bed bug infestations. A trained professional pest control company is absolutely necessary for these creatures.
