It’s Time For Baby Squirrels

It’s time for baby squirrels!baby squirrel

As we wrap-up the final days of summer and roll into the bounty of fall, be on the look out for baby grey squirrels.   Grey squirrels give birth in the late winter into the very early spring, but once is just not enough for them. During June through July, a female squirrel will give birth to another two to four babies! In nature one may find nests padded with shredded bark, leaves, moss and feathers, nestled in cavities of trees or even in birdhouses, but if these creatures are taking residence in your home, insulation becomes the material of choice, leaving you with shredded and often fecal and urine stained insulation.

As the name indicates, gray squirrels may be grey, but they do not stay true to just one color. Their coats can be different variations of grey, mixed with yellow to reddish brown hues, but that is not all. In the Greater Hudson Valley, our service area, black-furred and albino gray squirrels have also been seen. Regardless of the color of their fur all grey squirrels have sharp claws, strong legs and big bushy tails that measure about half of their body length.  The bushy tails are used for balance, as a parachute, or to protect the animal from the sun or cold.   They also have chisel-like front teeth that continually grow, causing them to have to chew to keep them from growing into themselves. This very behavior can cause major destruction to structures as they chew through wood, wires and insulation, creating fire hazards and holes in residences and commercial structures.

How To Avoid Squirrels In Your Home

  • If anyone is feeding the squirrels, persuade them to stop.
  • Trim trees 10 feet away from the home.
  • Squirrel-proof your bird feeders.
  • Keep the area underneath the feeder clean.
  • Seal openings at the joints of siding, overhanging eaves and where pipes and utility lines enter the home. Please visit our wildlife exclusion page for further information.
  • Replace plastic attic vents with metal designs securely attached to the building.
