Love is in The Air

Love is in the air

Love is in the air everywhere I look around

Love is in the air every sight and every sound

And I don’t know if I’m being foolish

I don’t know if I’m being wise

But it’s something that I must believe in

And it’s there when I look in your eyes.

Love is in the air, in the whisper of the trees,

Love is in the air in the thunder of the sea…..

Tom Jones “Love is in The Air”

Ahhh, spring is around the corner and love is in the air for a handful of critters in our area.  I know, it’s hard to think about spring when we still have about a foot of snow on the ground and we are anticipating another big storm early next week, but to our wildlife, spring is near and Love is in The Air.

Raccoons, Skunks, Gray Squirrels and Southern Flying Squirrels all mate around the same time frame give or take a month or two.  Raccoons typically breed in late January to February giving birth in March through May.  Gray squirrels mate in mid December into January and have young in February and March.  You will probably begin to see little squirrels running around, I have, running over the snow from tree to tree-  Skunks breed late February into early March and give birth May through June.

So what does this mean to a residential or commercial property owner?  It’s time to ensure that your property is sealed tight. Now that the female is pregnant, she will be on the hunt for a nice warm, dry spot to have her babies.  Some of your riskier areas include, any egress point into your premises; chimney, soffit area, dormers, these are typical areas where egress points are located.  Below are some tips to assist you in reducing your risk of a human/wildlife conflict:

  • If anyone is feeding the wildlife in your neighborhood, persuade him or her to stop.
  • Remove accessible food sources – don’t leave pet food or their food bowls outside.
  • Wildlife proof your garbage cans and put your garbage our in the morning.
  • Trim your trees away from your home or place of business (at least 10 feet)
  • Seal openings at the joints of siding, overhanging eaves and where pipes and utility lines enter the home.
  • Replace plastic attic vents with metal designs securely attached to the building.
  • Ensure that your chimney is property capped
