Why and how to Decontaminate & Sanitize after wildlife infestation.

You may have had a critter or two taking residence or passing through your home.  Once you realized this you immediately reached out with help to have them removed. But, removal is not the only thing you need to be concerned with.  Did you know that when an animal decides to stop by or pass through your property, they leave behind damaged and soiled attic insulation?  Wildlife will bring bedding material, store food and utilize your residence or commercial property, as a bathroom.  Their urine and feces carry diseases and viruses that could harm you and/or your family. Wildlife Busters offers a full sanitization and decontamination service.

This is what soiled insulation looks like.

Below are a few disease and the effects they have on humans:

HANTAVIRUS PULMONARY SYNDROME:

Description: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is a virus.  Rodents shed the virus in their urine, droppings and saliva.

Cause:The Hantavirus strain present in the Northeast (called “New York-1”) is spread by wild mice, specifically the deer mouse, Permoyscus maniculatus, and the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus. Both may invade homes.

Symptoms: The first signs of sickness, especially fever and

muscle aches, appear 1 to 5 weeks after exposure, followed by shortness of breath and coughing. Once this phase begins, the disease progresses rapidly and hospitalization is often needed within 24 hours.

RACCOON ROUNDWORM:

DescriptionRaccoon Roundworm is a disease caused by a parasite that lives in the intestines of raccoons.  The roundworm survives by feeding on nutrients that the raccoonhas digested.

Cause: Raccoons shed millions of the microscopic roundworm eggs in their feces.  People may encounter the eggs through direct contact with raccoon droppings or by touching a contaminated area or object.  If they don’t wash their hands they may later transfer the eggs to their mouths.  Small children are particularly vulnerable because they tend to put their hands and other objects into their mouths.   You may also become infected by breathing in the raccoon roundworm eggs.

Symptoms: Nausea, skin irritations, tiredness, liver enlargement, loss of coordination and muscle control, blindness in attentiveness and coma.

HISTOPLASMOSIS:

Description: Histoplasmosis is a lung infection caused by inhaling the spores of the fungus, Histoplasma Capsulatum.

Cause: Inhaling the mold spores.  Spores are often

encountered in old or abandoned bird or bat roosts, especially those in damp ore moist areas.  Birds and bats do not carry this disease, but they are associated with it because their droppings enrich soil and promote the growth of the fungus.

Symptoms: Flu like symptoms anywhere from 3 to 18 days after potential exposure.  On some occasions, the symptoms do not go away, resulting in chronic lung infection.

If you have had a wildlife infestation and are experiencing any symptoms above, please seek medical attention immediately.
