Southern Flying Squirrells

Fun Facts About Flying Squirrels

Southern Flying SquirrellsWhen we think of creatures that soar through the air, we automatically think of birds, but Flying Squirrels deserve a bit of a nod for their grace and capabilities. They are slight in stature, weighing in at a mere 1.8 to 2.5 ounces and are light on their feet. They rely on the air current to help them soar through the skies and depending on the conditions, they are capable of gliding up to 150 feet or more from a soaring 60 feet above! They are able to control the direction they are flying by a subtle tensing and turning of their legs and body and by flapping their tails. They are quick to turn at right angles and use their tails and their bodies to slow themselves down. This gives them ample time to put out their feet and land with grace, just in time to run up a tree.

I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for any creature with big eyes, giving them a cartoon-like feel, but for flying squirrels this attribute is more about function over form. Their big eyes allow them to have great night vision and the loose skin between their front and hind legs are their version of the birds’ wing.
Delicate and graceful, cute and cuddly, one may almost welcome their presence close to your home, but these nocturnal creatures are highly sociable and active year-round, so ensure that your home is properly sealed and secured to avoid making your home an attractive place to call their home. They can cause a great deal of damage to your home with their constant chewing and nest building, which in turn can also be a fire hazard. They also carry diseases that can be harmful to humans and bring food into your homes that may attract insects and other wildlife.

As you go out and enjoy the leaves changing and take in the brisk air, pause a moment and look around your home. Do you sees gaps in your siding or roofline? Do you have open roof vents? An ounce of prevention can save you thousands in the long run. We believe in preventing a situation before it becomes a problem and offer various wildlife exclusion services to do so.

  • We begin with a thorough site inspection to locate squirrel access points. This is performed by one of our highly trained Wildlife Technicians.
  • The second step is the installation of one way doors where necessary as well as set traps for capture (if need be)
We then seal all access points.
  • Once the squirrel activity has ceased (typically 3 to 5 business days) we seal the final access point.
  • We then make habitat modification suggestions to property owner (trim trees, remove shrubs etc).
  • We also offer a long-term warranty and prevention plan.
